by B. Holland Heck
Pete was saving money to buy a small boat of his own. And he dreamed of the day when he could quit school and go to work on his father’s sightseeing boat, the Clipper Catt, that operated out of Gulfport, Mississippi. Strangely enough, or so it seemed to Pete, his family insisted he must stay in school, and even hoped he would go on to study at the Merchant Maritime Academy.
Enlisting the aid of his friend Jim Bob, impatient Pete decided to try to raise money faster by searching for buried pirate treasure on historic Ship Island. The boys found more excitement and danger than they had bargained for, and the money for Pete’s boat fund came from a very unexpected source.
The author has created strong and meaningful situations and characterizations in her portrayal of two young friends who gain a deeper understanding of each other and their responsibilities. Robert Cassell’s illustrations reflect his long acquaintance with the locale of the story.
This story is based on the Skrmetta family and their boats sailing between Biloxi and Ship Island.
